Jerry Lee Lewis was the next big thing in rock 'n' roll when his marriage to Myra Gale Brown became known in 1957. Myra was 13 years old at the time, and Jerry's distant cousin. It was 22 year old Jerry Lee's third marriage.
The couple were in England when the news broke and the 37-date tour was cancelled after 3 dates. The marriage more or less ended his career for a decade.
I found this interview from 1958 with Jerry Lee and Myra.
I don't think anyone should get married at 13. Heck, I don't think you should get married at 18 either. But Jerry Lee was 14 the first time he got married, and 17 the second time. I guess they did things differently in the deep South back then.
Elvis met and fell in love with Priscilla when she was 14, but kept the relationship very quiet for the first few years. Maybe he learned a thing or two from what happened to Jerry Lee Lewis.
Anyway, back to the movie. It seems like the 1950's were more fun in the 1980's. And it's easy to fall in love with the crazy, energetic, original wild man of rock 'n' roll. How can you not like someone who set his piano on fire in the name of rock 'n' roll?
The couple got married a second time, in an attempt to revive Jerry Lee Lewis' career. Dennis Quaid as Jerry Lee Lewis and Winona Ryder as Myra.
Jerry Lee Lewis re-recorded his own songs for the movie.
I think it was Jens (Mr J.Tex himself) who told me to check it out, because I'd really like it. Well, he was right. Now go and check out some of Jens' great music!
