If A Tree Falls

If you haven't seen If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front then I suggest you do. It is a really good documentary about the rise and fall of radical activist group Earth Liberation Front.

I can see why it was nominated for an academy award - it's thrilling and yet a balanced account of what happened. If A Tree Falls also asks some important questions about activism, the environment and the way we define terrorism.

Friday Night Beast

Had a great Friday night in the company of friends. Sunshine, drinks, rock n roll - what more can a girl ask for?

Saw a few bands at Debaser and Beast really stood out. Imagine Janis Joplin singing 70's hard rock. Really powerful and surprisingly good. Check 'em out!

The 20Belows at West Coast Riot

The 20Belows are playing at West Coast Riot this summer. Make sure you check out these guys if you're going!

I've wanted to book them for quite some time but we never found the proper time and setting as they aren't really known in Sweden. Hopefully they'll get some attention in this summer so we can book them for the next instalment of 1000 Punks in the fall.

You'll find more info on The 20Belows here.

Late Night Domestics

I don't know what you get up to when you come home from a night on the town. Me, I go all domestic. We're talking laundry that gets folded, dishes that get washed and clutter that gets organized. Sometimes there are plates of meze.

This week I reorganized my hallway table when I got home at 2.30 am on Thursday morning. My hallway is that cluttered little place where keys, hairbrushes, lipsticks, spare change, trinkets, shoes and wallets live. By the way, don't be fooled by these photos - there is another shoe rack on the other side of the door. A woman needs more than three pairs of shoes to choose from.

Anyway. I didn't get a "before" photo as it was 2.30 am and I was tired and had rum and ginger ale in my system. But the table was messy and cluttered.

I bought this vintage Starline train case last summer but didn't really use it for anything. Then I realized that the train case has compartments, looks stylish... I'm gonna use it to organize my hallway!

So that's what I did. And then I brushed my teeth and went to bed.

Wednesday Night Punk

Local punk bands Nobelkommittén, Bäddat För Trubbel and Uppgång & Fall played live at Klaffbron in Malmö last night. The show was packed and we had to wait in line to get in - even though we were there early.

It was good to see such a big turnout for a local punk gig. Bäddat För Trubbel were really good live - better than the LP. Check them out if you get the chance. Also, thanks to the random dude who paid for my Bäddat För Trubbel-pin when I didn't have the right change.

Nobelkommittén seems to have expanded to include three guitarists, two backup singers and keyboards. It made for a good sound and I have to say I like it better live than the recordings. I guess it's just a little faster and dirtier live, and that's how I like my punk.
Nobelkommittén are releasing their new album in collaboration with HepTown Records - it will be out in a few weeks. In the meantime you can listen to it on Soundcloud.

For the honor of Greyskull

I just got the best keychain ever. Anyone else remember the princess of power from those cartoons we watched in the 80's? She-Ra!

Come to think of it - She-Ra, Jem and ThunderCats were pretty good role models for young girls.

It makes me proud...

When someone uses the platform that fame has given them for good things.

When Tom Gabel of Against Me! came out as transgender in an interview in Rolling Stone a few days ago Brian Fallon immediately showed his support. You'll find what he wrote on Gaslight Anthem's tumblr. The vast majority of the punk community were supportive and encouraging.
Do what you need to do - and let others be who they need to be. That's punk rock at it's best.

I really didn't know all that much about transgender prior to this and it just proves that good things can come from being honest and sharing what you are going through. Talking about things is the key to spreading knowledge and understanding. What Tom - now known as Laura Jane Grace - did was a very brave thing.

When Rise Against's Tim McIlrath talked about politics, being uncool and wanting to change the world for the better. He tells AP how the punk bands he grew up listening to opened his eyes to sweatshops, animal rights, the environment and struggles for independence in various third-world countries. And how he is trying to pay it forward.
You can find part of the interview here.

Ølfestival

Yup, I visited Ølfestivalen (the Beer Festival) in Copenhagen today. Drank Belgian fruit beer, hot beer with whipped cream, English cider, Danish birch beer and a few other varieties.

Ølfestivalen is held at the Carlsberg brewery in Copenhagen. 200 Danish kronor will get you admission to the venue, a sampling glass (which you get to keep) and 10 tokens. Each token can be swapped for 10 cl of beer at the various stalls. We also got the silly little holder that you hang around your neck put your glass in to keep your hands free. It's the thing to do - even the hipster crowd was wearing them.

I'm a fan of Belgian fruit beer and tried a few different ones. Wheat beer with blueberries anyone?
There was a lot of different beer on offer - truly something for every taste. My favourite was SommerHvede by Danish brewery Skovlyst.

The food was surprisingly good and we had a veggie tarte with salad for lunch. Then we had some delicious smoked brie with apricot jam and walnuts. Very tasty and it went very well with beer.
We rounded off the festival with hot beer served with whipped cream - it tastes a lot better than it sounds!
Sampling away!

First beer of the day. Verdict: Meh.

Sister and her tiny beer glass in the silly holder.

Drinking more fruity beer.

Lunch. Surprisingly good vegetarian food.

And the winner is... SommerHvede by Skovlyst!

Ever had hot beer with whipped cream? I have.

Smallest glass ever. Kinda looks like a tiny pint of Guinness.

Swedish Apple Pancake

I tried a classic recipe from my beloved vintage cookbook today. Swedish pancake with apples - baked in the oven. This is a version of a classic Swedish oven pancake - the one that is often made with bacon and eaten with lingonberry jam.

My maternal grandmother made oven pancake on quite a few occasions. This was my first attempt at cooking one and I'm really pleased with the result. You know you've done it right when the taste reminds you of your childhood.
I served it with lingonberry jam.

Apples - peeled and sliced. I put some cinnamon on top.

Pancake batter. 3 eggs, milk, flour, sugar and salt.

Then I poured the batter over the apples...

...and after 40 minutes in the oven it came out like this.

RIP Adam Yauch

Beastie Boy MCA aka Adam Yauch has passed away. He was 47.

Adam Yauch directed the Beastie Boys videos under the name Nathaniel Hörnblower and ran movie production and distribution company Oscilloscope . He was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and it looks like he finally lost the battle.

"I wanna say a little something that's long overdue, this disrespect to women has got to be through, to all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends, I wanna offer my love and respect to the end."
Sure Shot - Beastie Boys

Adam Yauch - thank you for the music and crazy videos.
Rest in peace.

Pitchfork has a good obituary - read it.

Love for breakfast

People think I'm kidding when I say that I eat chocolate for breakfast. But I do. It's quick, tasty and comes conveniently wrapped. It's easy to break of the pieces and eat them as I run around and get ready. If I run out of time I can always eat it in the car.

But this morning I had love for breakfast. Who can object to that?
Kärlek (=Swedish for love) is the name of a new version of a classic candy bar. It's jelly raspberries and white truffle in milk chocolate.
