Malmö Derby Festival

 Quads. And they are on my feet.

Malmö Derby Festival started today and my friend Mia asked if we should head down and try some skates on. I was just gonna head down and check out the festival but suddenly there were quad roller skates on my feet and pads on my knees and elbows. A helmet and some wrist guards and I was ready to go! Eh, make that ready to roll.

It was fun to try it and I managed a few laps around the track. Very slow and cautious laps, but still. I even tried a few stops and balancing on one foot. The technique seemed kinda similar to ice skating. Maybe all that rollerblading I did as a teenager helped too.

And then we watched some people who really knew how to skate, ate chocolate and bought merch. All food at the festival is vegetarian (hooray!) so we had hot dogs too.

Midsummer Murders Roller Derby

Recovered from a fun Friday night out with some roller derby. Malmö's own Crime City Rollers went up against Irn Bruisers from Glasgow, Scotland and Crime City Rollers B-team went up against Irish team Cork City Firebirds.

Roller Derby has really grown fast over here and it was fun to see such a great turnout. This was the first bout I attended but I will definitely be back for more.

Whip It - Roller Girls Rule

I watched Whip It this weekend and I was pleasantly surprised. Finally a girly feel-good movie that doesn't involve learning to walk in heels, acting more feminine and getting a pretty haircut.

Oh, and getting the guy isn't the most important thing either.
It's friendship, being true to yourself and Roller Derby.



It's great to see so many different types of women represented in the same movie, from the shy rookie Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) to the rude and badass Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis).

I first learned about Roller Derby a few years ago, when I hung out at Punk Rock Domestics. Back then there were few roller girls outside the US, and the sport was just getting started in London.

The sport has grown since the last time I looked, and now there's even a team in Copenhagen. I'm tempted to take the train across the bridge to see what they are about...
Roller Derby looks like so much fun, but I'm scared that I'm gonna break something.
